CAN 2025: la réaction de Brahim Diaz qui apprend en direct le sacre du Maroc sur tapis vert
Criticized for his failed panenka penalty in the final of the last Africa Cup of Nations, Brahim Diaz celebrated Morocco's victory on Tuesday evening on the sidelines of the match between Manchester City and Real Madrid.
A truly wonderful evening for Brahim Diaz. On the sidelines of Real Madrid's qualification for the Champions League quarter-finals, the Moroccan international learned Tuesday night that he had won the African Cup of Nations. The appeals committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked the title won by Senegal at the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on January 18th and declared Morocco the winner.
Brahim Diaz missed a golden opportunity to win the final after a dramatic penalty attempt in stoppage time of the second half, following minutes of chaos and protests from the Senegalese players. Two months after the match, the Lions of Teranga were sanctioned for temporarily leaving the pitch in protest against the referee's decision to award the penalty to Morocco, shortly after a goal was disallowed for Senegal.
The CAF appeals jury justifies its decision by applying articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), according to which if a team "refuses to play or leaves the field before the regulatory end of the match", "it will be considered the loser and will be definitively eliminated from the current competition".
Senegal will appeal
Starting in the Champions League round of 16 second leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid (1-2), Brahim Diaz was on the bench when he heard the good news. Looking somewhat incredulous, the 26-year-old repeatedly clenched his fists. He did so again at the final whistle.
However, the matter is not expected to end there. The Senegalese federation denounced "an unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision that discredits African football," and indicated that it would initiate "an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport" in Lausanne, Switzerland, "as soon as possible."
Senegal defender Moussa Niakhaté shared a photo on Instagram of himself lifting the AFCON trophy and wearing a medal, with the comment: "Come and get them! They're crazy!" He was immediately imitated by teammates from his national team who posted the same type of images.
