Pape Malick Ndour Affair: Amadou Sall denounces a “sloppy shame” and “authoritarian excesses”

Affaire Pape Malick Ndour : Me Amadou Sall dénonce une « honte bâclée » et les « dérives autoritaires »

Former Minister of Justice El Hadji Amadou Sall has strongly condemned what he calls a "worrying turn of events" in the management of public debate and the "authoritarian excesses" surrounding the Pape Malick Ndour affair.

"We're not having a stupidity contest. Who's the stupidest? If this is the fate governments reserve for democracy and the people, then it won't be worth it anymore," he declared. He immediately castigated "a way of governing that tramples on democratic principles."

The former Minister of Justice warns against the judicialization of political debate, which he considers a direct threat to freedom of expression. "There are rules, there is the law. Let's respect the law, period. We cannot accept that political debate becomes judicialized, nor that a blanket of silence prohibits citizens from expressing themselves and being irreverent," he told Iradio's Jury du dimanche.

This is, according to him, the reason why: "They released him, all shame swallowed."

Irreverence, a Citizen and Democratic Right

For Mr. Sall, irreverence is a citizen's right, inseparable from democratic pluralism.

"I have the right to be irreverent, including towards the President of the Republic. Respect does not exclude criticism," the lawyer said, referring to Pape Malick Ndour's outburst against the regime.

Behind the prosecutions of certain opposition figures, Mr. Sall sees above all the expression of a fear of power. "These untimely imprisonments reflect a fear. A fear of the truth. And this calls into question Senegal's entire democratic journey, which had reached a certain maturity."

Through the Pape Malick Ndour affair, he believes that Senegal is witnessing a challenge to its democratic achievements, where the justice system is becoming an instrument of political deterrence. "If anyone who criticizes ends up in prison, it's because we're facing a regime that suppresses freedoms, a regime that is afraid," he concluded.

Pour risque de trouble à l’ordre public, le préfet doit interdire ce terra-meeting. La cocotte minute de colère des sénégalais et sénégalaises est prête à exploser, donc ce meeting politique est une insulte à la souffrance du peuple. Si des mesures doivent être annoncées, elles doivent être faites au nom du gouvernement. Une petite étincelle lors de ce meeting et le pays sera ingérable. Que toutes les personnes qui souffrent se dirigent pancartes à la main au stade Léopold Sédar Senghor le 8 novembre pour hurler leur douleur.
