Assemblée nationale : Abdou Mbow met Ousmane Sonko face à ses promesses sur la criminalisation de l'homosexualité
The question period in the National Assembly was marked by a direct interpellation from MP Abdou Mbow to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on the sensitive issue of criminalizing homosexuality. Speaking on the matter, Mbow referred to a recent controversy that had reignited public debate, particularly concerning an alleged HIV transmission involving individuals identified as homosexual. According to him, this situation brings back to the forefront a commitment made by Ousmane Sonko before he came to power.
The MP recalled that in December 2022, the current head of government had declared that the law criminalizing homosexuality would be "one of the first laws passed" once elected. However, he emphasized, the bill adopted on February 18 by the government only proposes a "restructuring of the offense," without going as far as the announced criminalization.
Faced with what he considered a significant discrepancy, Abdou Mbow demanded an explanation from the Prime Minister. "Since you are the leader of the parliamentary majority, will you ask your members of parliament to propose an amendment to criminalize the government's bill? If not, what prevents you from fulfilling your commitment?" he asked in the chamber. Indeed, Abdou Mbow was clear: "This is a contradiction between campaign promises and current government action."
