«Ils ont voulu utiliser la violence pour arriver au pouvoir…» : Macky Sall brise le silence sur les événement tragiques de 2021-2024
Macky Sall, the former President of Senegal, wants to become Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). Currently campaigning, he met with members of civil society this Monday in the United States. The former head of the Senegalese executive was questioned about the tragic political events that occurred in Senegal between 2021 and 2024.
"For 12 years, I have faced challenges, including this violence which has emerged in a very serious way in Senegal. People wanted to take advantage of a particular situation to use violence to seize power. This is something I could not accept as President of the Republic, because I swore an oath to defend the institutions of the Republic, to defend democracy," he explained.
Macky Sall, who mentions the State's obligation to defend its citizens, lists: "They burned citizens' houses, targeted the headquarters of press organizations which were ransacked, threatened judges, threatened politicians, ministers, burned their houses, destroyed the construction sites of the national express train, the BRT construction sites, burned the University of Dakar."
The former head of state informed his audience that there had been "terrorist attacks on public transport buses, resulting in deaths." Faced with such a situation, he said, "the survival of the Republic was at stake." The Senegalese state therefore confronted this violence, "restored peace, and the cases were handed over to the justice system," he added.
What about the Amnesty Law? Macky Sall indicates that, not being a candidate, he did not want to leave behind a devastated country. "We must be able to forgive. That is the meaning of the amnesty law, which was passed against the wishes of my side. But I acted as head of state, looking only at the will of the country. What was in Senegal's interest? It certainly wasn't to leave people in prison, to leave a country in flames, and to leave," he says.
And the amnesty law, Macky Sall indicated, allowed for the erasure of everything that had happened, for the release of all those who were in prison. And the presidential election closed this chapter, since the Senegalese people decided at the ballot box by giving power to the Pastef regime.
“They participated in the elections and they won democratically. So it was the choice and the will of the Senegalese people to give them power. It is the royal path. It is the people who give, it is not through street protests that one will acquire power. And Senegal has shown the strength of its institutions, democracy and the Senegalese model have prevailed. That is what happened,” he added.
