Sénégal : Menace sur le stock de préservatifs !
Just months before the opening of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), an unexpected and major public health challenge has arisen in the preparations. According to exclusive information provided by a member of the medical community with extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical issues, Senegal is currently facing a critical shortage of condoms. This situation poses a real risk to the supply needed to meet the demands of this global event, which is preparing to welcome thousands of athletes, officials, and visitors.
The origins of this crisis highlight the fragility of the country's supply mechanisms. For years, the national stockpile of condoms, distributed free of charge and regularly to the population as part of prevention policies, relied almost exclusively on funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). However, this chain of solidarity was broken under the presidency of Donald Trump. Upon taking office, the American leader eliminated financial aid allocated to this type of program, abruptly stating that the United States would no longer purchase condoms for African countries. Since the implementation of this restrictive measure, national reserves have not undergone structural replenishment commensurate with long-term needs.
The imminent Youth Olympic Games highlight the consequences of this disengagement. In the logistical practices of major international sporting events, widespread and free access to preventative measures is a standard and essential health protocol for any host country. Faced with the urgency of the situation and the drying up of long-standing American aid, the Senegalese authorities find themselves in a bind.
To avoid a health fiasco, the Senegalese state must urgently release emergency funds from the national budget to acquire a substantial stockpile, or negotiate the opening of a dedicated budget line with the National Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee.
Experts emphasize that managing this stockpile is crucial for preserving progress in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether sports and health authorities can react in a timely manner to ensure the safety of all participants.
