Coupe du monde 2026 : France avec Mateta et Risser, sans Camavinga
Didier Deschamps announced on Thursday the list of 26 players selected for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Les Bleus, placed in Group I, will kick off their campaign on Tuesday, June 16, with a highly anticipated clash against Senegal.
Before this entry into the competition, the French team will play two preparation matches against Ivory Coast on Thursday, June 4, and then against Northern Ireland on Monday, June 8.
For Didier Deschamps, this competition has a special significance. At the helm of Les Bleus since 2012, the manager will be leading his fourth World Cup after a quarter-final appearance in 2014, a victory in 2018, and a final in 2022. The objective is clear: to end his 14-year journey on the French bench with one last great run.
Of the 26 players called up, only eleven were already present at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Jules Koundé, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Theo Hernandez, Ibrahima Konaté, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Adrien Rabiot, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Marcus Thuram retain their place in the French squad.
Around this experienced core, several new players have established themselves in recent years. Mike Maignan will be in goal for France, while Manu Koné, Rayan Cherki, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué continue their rise in the national team.
World champion in 2018 and absent in Qatar due to injury, N'Golo Kanté is also part of the squad. The midfielder is one of the few players who can dream of a second world title, alongside Kylian Mbappé, Lucas Hernandez, and Ousmane Dembélé.
This list also features a few surprises. Jean-Philippe Mateta returns to the attack after his strong performances at club level. In defense, Maxence Lacroix also makes his return, while young Robin Risser has been selected as the third-choice goalkeeper. However, Eduardo Camavinga, who is injured, is not included in the French squad.
