Coupe du monde 2026: l'Allemagne va réfléchir à un boycott du Mondial aux Etats-Unis face aux menaces de Trump
The German government confirmed on Tuesday that it was leaving the choice of whether or not to boycott the next 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, in response to threats from Donald Trump.
The German Football Association (DFB) and the international federation (FIFA) will decide "independently" whether or not to boycott the World Cup, which will be held largely in the United States this summer, the German government told AFP after calls for such a boycott in response to threats from Donald Trump. "This assessment is therefore the responsibility of the federations concerned, namely the DFB and FIFA. The federal government will accept this assessment," said State Secretary for Sport Christiane Schenderlein in an email to AFP, which had inquired about the possibility of a boycott of the World Cup being held in Canada, the United States, and Mexico (June 11 - July 19).
"The federal government respects the autonomy of sport. Decisions regarding participation in or boycott of major sporting events fall exclusively under the purview of the relevant sports federations, and not the political sphere," declared Ms. Schenderlein, a member of the CDU, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative party. Faced with tensions arising from the American desire to seize Greenland and threats of increased tariffs against European states that oppose it, the first voices suggesting a boycott—or even cancellation—of the World Cup have been heard in Germany, a major footballing nation, in recent days.
Nearly half of Germans would approve of a World Cup boycott
“If Donald Trump carries out his threats regarding Greenland and triggers a trade war with the EU, I find it hard to imagine European countries participating in the World Cup,” influential Conservative MP Roderich Kiesewetter told the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper on Tuesday. Another CDU MP, Jürgen Hardt, the party’s foreign policy spokesman, told the Bild newspaper that “cancelling the tournament” was “the last resort to bring President Trump to his senses.”
Calling for a "united response" from Europe, Social Democratic (SPD) MP Sebastian Roloff raised the possibility of "considering withdrawing from the World Cup" with the business daily Handelsblatt. According to a poll conducted by the Insa institute for Bild on Thursday and Friday among 1,000 people, nearly half of Germans (47%) would support a World Cup boycott if Washington were to annex Greenland. A large majority (35%) would remain opposed.
Four-time world champions, the German national team has not missed a World Cup since the immediate post-war period (1950). Donald Trump has recently displayed a very close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who presented him with a newly created "FIFA Peace Prize" during the World Cup draw last month .
