Extraits du Coran sur un nguimb : le verdict est tombé pour Doudou Sané
On April 5th, wrestler Doudou Sané sparked a major controversy. An opponent of Pape Mbaye in the lead-up to the Modou Lô-Sa Thiès royal wrestling match, he appeared wearing a nguimb (a traditional loincloth) bearing Quranic inscriptions. This caused an uproar. Social media erupted. Religious leaders expressed their outrage.
In response, the president of the Senegalese Wrestling Federation (FSL), Bira Sène, offered his apologies, notably on behalf of the accused, and announced that the latter would be summoned for a hearing before the regulations and disciplinary committee of the governing body of wrestling.
The federal body was lenient with Doudou Sané. Record reports that it issued him a "firm warning," clearly giving credence to the wrestler's defense, who swore he was unaware that the inscriptions on his nguimb were excerpts from the Quran, and pledged not to repeat the offense.
