Mondial 2026 : Pourquoi les supporters traînent la FIFA devant la justice
The European Supporters' Federation (ESF) filed a formal complaint against FIFA with the European Commission on Tuesday. The complaint concerns the "exorbitant" ticket prices for the upcoming World Cup, as well as purchasing procedures deemed "opaque and unfair." Supported by Euroconsumers, the organization representing consumers across the continent, the ESF accuses the international federation of abusing its monopoly position. According to the association's statement, FIFA imposed sales conditions on fans that are completely unacceptable in a competitive market.
The complaint highlights six specific abuses, including a dramatic price increase compared to previous editions. The figures cited are particularly striking, as the cheapest tickets for the final currently start at $4,185, or approximately €3,609, which is more than seven times the price charged for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The organizations also denounce a bait-and-switch tactic, with a $60 ticket for the group stage that was practically sold out even before general public sales opened, as well as uncontrolled dynamic pricing.
Finally, FSE and Euroconsumers criticize the lack of transparency in the process, pointing out that buyers often don't know the exact location of their seats or even which teams are competing at the time of payment. The two organizations are now calling on the European Commission to intervene firmly to force FIFA to abandon its dynamic pricing, freeze prices at the levels announced in December for the next sales phase in April, and publish, at least 48 hours in advance, the number of tickets remaining in each category. This legal action comes after a failed attempt at consultation last December, during which fans urged FIFA to respect the universality and cultural significance of the World Cup.
